Warner Bros has dropped the latest trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which follows the DC Comics character as he goes up against the Daughters of Atlas.

The new film is directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation), with a script by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. It stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler and Dame Helen Mirren.

The Story

When 14-year-old Billy Batson speaks the name of an ages-old wizard, he is granted all of his powers and becomes Shazam. The film was a massive hit at the box office, earning over $365 million worldwide.

The sequel, which was written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, follows the superhero and his foster family as they deal with the villains Hespera (Helen Mirren) and the Daughters of Atlas who want to reclaim Shazam’s power. This time around, it’s not just Billy who’s wielding the gods’ powers; his foster siblings are also transformed into adult superheroes and the movie introduces new characters to DC Comics mythology.

As of this writing, the sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on March 17th. It’s a good sign that the team behind the first film is returning, including director David F. Sandberg and screenwriter Henry Gayden, as well as most of the cast. Plus, Peter Safran is producing through his Safran Company.

The Cast

The DC movie universe has been feeling like it’s dying for a while, but it looks as though Shazam! Fury of the Gods could be a new beginning.

Billy Batson (Zachary Levi) is a foster kid who can turn into a superhero by saying the magic word “Shazam!” The same powers are granted to his foster siblings. These include Mary Bromfield, Freddy Freeman, Darla Dudley, Eugene Choi and Pedro Pena.

It’s also time to reckon with the gods, which is what Billy does when he’s confronted by Hespera (Dame Helen Mirren) and her Daughters of Atlas. These goddesses are one of the sources of power for Shazam.

And in case you haven’t guessed it yet, the big moment of this trailer is when Billy takes on a giant dragon in Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. It’s pretty epic, if you ask us. We’re predicting it will be one of the highlights of this sequel. And it’s also a big sign that director David F. Sandberg is still able to balance the humor and action that made the first Shazam so fun.

The Trailer

The wait is almost over for the sequel to DC’s 2019 hit Shazam! The movie will finally be released on March 17, 2023 after several delays.

The trailer reveals that Shazam’s adopted family will be facing off against massive creatures and villains like a dragon. It looks like he will need to fight and win against them again in order to save the world from their evil plans.

In addition, we can see new cast members such as Dame Helen Mirren (Red), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill) and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) joining the film. They will play the Daughters of Atlas, one of Shazam’s main sources of power.

They are not going to be happy with Billy Batson/Shazam’s decision to grant their powers to him. As a result, they will be stripped of their abilities and will have to use their own in order to fight against the nefarious forces that are coming after them.

Final Words

When we first met Billy Batson, he had just been bestowed the power of Shazam!, which means that he can transform into an adult Super Hero. And now the film’s second trailer gives us a look at how this story continues, as Shazam faces off against Hespera and Kalypso, daughters of Atlas.

The trailer also introduces us to a new cast of empowered foster siblings, including Freddy Freeman (Adam Brody), Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman), Pedro Pena (Ross Butler), Eugene Choi and Mary Bromfield. As a result, the film looks to feature plenty of magic and mayhem.

However, with Shazam potentially being the last gasp of the DC universe, how will this sequel play into the bigger picture? That is one question that new DC head James Gunn is still trying to answer. But, he hasn’t made any official comments yet on the matter. We’ll keep you updated. Thanks for reading! See you in theaters March 17th, 2023.
