Just a few days after the game’s one-year anniversary, developers FromSoftware have announced its first major expansion for Elden Ring. Titled ‘Shadow of the Erdtree,’ this will be released on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.

While no details were provided, lore-savvy fans believe the expansion will revolve around Miquella. He’s the brother of Malenia, and was captured by Mohg, Lord of Blood, in order to feed him the blood god he worships.

Gameplay

If you’re a fan of Elden Ring, this news will have you jumping for joy. Developer From Software has announced a major piece of DLC for the game, Shadow of the Erdtree.

After selling 20 million copies and winning every game of the year award, fans have been clamoring for new content. The studio has been relatively quiet on the subject so far, releasing patches to balance and improve PvP in the game’s collosseums, but no big expansion announcements until now.

The announcement comes in the form of a tweet from the official Elden Ring Twitter account. The message bids the Tarnished to “walk a new path” and reveals that the studio is currently developing a “new expansion.”

In addition, From Software has also released what appears to be a piece of concept art for the upcoming DLC. The image shows a lone rider traveling across a field of wheat towards an enormous tree in the distance. The tree appears to be rotting and leaking a golden light from within.

Release Date

A year after it launched, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have finally announced the long-awaited Elden Ring DLC – Shadow of the Erdtree. Announced by the developer’s Twitter account, the expansion is currently in development and is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC later this year.

The first major expansion for the game, Shadow of the Erdtree will bring players to new locations and enemies throughout the Land Between. It will also be accompanied by new PVP modes that will allow players to compete in duels, free-for-alls, and team fights at the new Colosseums in Limgrave, Leyndell, and Caelid.

This is the biggest expansion to an already-successful souls title, and it’s bound to be an even bigger experience than the multiplayer Colosseum update that arrived back in December. While we won’t know what to expect until the release date is out, it’s safe to say that the new content will be a lot more ambitious than anything the game has seen so far.

FromSoftware shocked the world with Elden Ring, which was released in early 2022 to near universal acclaim and quickly became the studio’s biggest game to date. It has since sold more than 20 million copies, with the latest update opening up Colosseums in Limgrave, Leyndell and Caelid to allow for PvP battles including duels, free-for-alls and team fights.

In addition to announcing a new major expansion, FromSoftware has also released key artwork for Shadow of the Erdtree. It’s not much to go on, and no release date has been given, but it should spark some lore speculation on forums and social media in the days ahead.

Many Elden Ring fans believe that the DLC will revolve around Miquella, Malenia?s brother, who is one of the Empyreans and has been cursed to be forever young. Throughout the game, Miquella is mentioned but never appears in-game. However, Sir Gideon Ofnir recently confirmed that Miquella is still alive and in a cocoon inside Mohg?s arena.

Final Words

After sweeping multiple Game of the Year awards and selling 20 million copies in its first year, FromSoftware has announced its first major expansion for Elden Ring. Titled Shadow of the Erdtree, this update will be coming to PS4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

The announcement comes on the heels of Elden Ring’s successful release and has fans excited for the latest addition to this wildly popular action roleplaying game. Since its launch, FromSoftware has released several small patches to add more content and PvP features, including a free Colosseum update in December that opened up several of the game’s arenas.

The new expansion will be focusing on the character Miquella, whose uncle Mohg kidnapped her and placed her in a cocoon in his boss room, causing her to become a blood god. This will be an opportunity for players to explore her background and discover what she was fighting against in the beginning of the game.
